Case Study

Steam Pressure Reducing Station, 9 barg to 3 barg

A well-designed steam pressure reducing station is about much more than simply dropping pressure.

Inlet
9 barg boiler steam
Outlet
3 barg process steam
Application
Process heating
Welding
6G coded

The Project

This assembly was fabricated to reduce 9 barg boiler steam down to 3 barg process pressure, providing a controlled steam supply for downstream process heating equipment such as heat exchangers, jacketed vessels or other steam-fed plant.

Key considerations include:

  • Correct PRV sizing and turndown.
  • Upstream and downstream pressure indication.
  • Steam velocity and downstream pipe sizing.
  • Condensate removal and drainage.
  • Isolation and maintainability.
  • Correct valve and component orientation.
  • Thermal expansion and pipe support.
  • Pressure-rated flanges, valves, gaskets and fittings suitable for steam service.

Steam Velocity

Reducing steam pressure significantly increases its specific volume, so the downstream side of the station must be considered carefully to avoid excessive velocity, noise, erosion and unstable pressure control.

Condensate Management

Condensate management is equally important. Poor drainage can lead to wet steam, water hammer, control issues and premature equipment failure.

The Result

9 bargBoiler steam in
3 bargProcess steam out

9 barg boiler steam in. Stable 3 barg process steam out. Correctly controlled, drained, supported and maintainable.

What We Do

At Willand Engineering, we design, fabricate and install complete steam pressure reducing stations, steam and condensate pipework, process heating assemblies and OEM pipework packages in carbon and stainless steel, and exotic metals, with relevant 6G codings.
